ABSTRACT:
Common weeds are frequently regarded as unwanted plants and are routinely removed from agricultural fields and urban landscapes. However, many of these neglected species possess significant medicinal value and have been traditionally used in various indigenous systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and folk healing practices. These plants grow abundantly with minimal care, making them easily accessible and cost-effective sources of therapeutic agents. The present abstract focuses on unveiling the medicinal potential of common weeds and highlights their importance as valuable natural resources.
Numerous weeds, such as Tridax procumbens, Ageratum conyzoides, Euphorbia hirta, Oxalis corniculata, and Cynodon dactylon, are known to exhibit diverse pharmacological activities, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, wound-healing, and anti asthmatic effects. The medicinal properties of these plants are attributed to the presence of bioactive phytoconstituents, including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, saponins, and terpenoids. Recent scientific studies have supported many of the traditional claims, validating the therapeutic potential of these commonly overlooked plants.
Despite their medicinal significance, common weeds remain under utilised and underexplored in modern drug discovery programs. Increased awareness, systematic phytochemical screening, and pharmacological evaluation of these plants could lead to the identification of novel lead compounds for the development of effective and affordable medicines. Furthermore, the conservation of traditional knowledge associated with weed-based remedies is essential for preserving ethnomedicinal heritage.
In conclusion, weeds should no longer be considered merely as nuisance plants but rather as nature’s neglected treasures with immense medicinal potential. Integrating traditional wisdom with modern scientific research can help unlock the therapeutic value of common weeds and promote sustainable, plant-based healthcare solutions.
