ABSTRACT:
Beetroot was mostly used as a food preparation additive in the past. Recently, beetroot has drawn more attention for its potent biological activity, particularly for the betalains (betanin) and nitrates it contains. It has been demonstrated that betalains reduce LDL, scavenge DPPH, and prevent DNA damage to eradicate oxidative and nitrative stress. Additionally, it has been discovered to have anticancer properties through preventing angiogenesis, activating apoptosis in cells, and promoting autophagy. While its role in treating hypertension and hyperglycemia is unclear, nitrate is the primary component in lowering blood lipids, glucose, and pressure in certain chronic conditions. Furthermore, eating beetroot, which is high in nitrates, may improve sports performance and lessen stiffness in the muscles after specific kinds of exercise. This plant's antioxidant, antidepressants, antibacterial, fungicides, anti-allergic, diuretic, expectorant, and carminative properties are employed in medicine in a variety of forms. The history, cultivation, and pharmacological properties of beetroot are the primary subjects of this review. This is an effort to highlight the need for further study and development and to gather and record data on many aspects of Beta vulgaris. This review aims to present enough data to support the nutritional benefits of beetroot, particularly with regard to bio-oxidation, neoplastic disorders, some chronic illnesses, and energy resupply.
